Birth certificates go digital for Aussies aged between 16 and 21 years in NSW

Young people aged 16 to 21 in NSW will become the first Australians to have access to a digital copy of their birth certificate.
The opt-in feature is available through the Service NSW app, makes it easy for people to access their credentials and is designed to meet international security standards.
Eligible applicants must have a NSW photo card or driver’s license to apply for a digital copy.
Young people across NSW will be able to carry their birth certificates securely on their phones rather than needing a paper copy, Customer Services and Digital Government Minister Jihad Dib said.
“This digital document provides instant convenience for young people who live away from home for work and education when they need a birth certificate to apply for certificates and licenses and makes job application easier,” he said.
“A digital birth certificate gives people greater control over personal information by providing a secure and convenient way to access one of the most important identity documents.
“It’s the same as carrying a birth certificate in your pocket, but much safer.”
Service NSW chief executive Greg Wells said the digital birth certificate was completely optional and could easily be downloaded from the Service NSW app.
“Losing birth certificates will be a thing of the past with the Service NSW app allowing customers to store their certificates in one place,” he said.
“We often assist people whose birth certificates and other documents are destroyed during natural disasters when people need such documents most; the digital version offers a solution for those who need to quickly verify their identity to access services.”

Digital birth certificates can be used to verify identities and apply for a variety of licenses and certifications needed to start a business, including Responsible Service of Alcohol, Responsible Gambling Conduct and other workforce licences, starting Tuesday.
Over time, the digital certificate will enable more transactions with NSW government services.
Service NSW and the NSW Birth, Death and Marriage Registry will engage community and industry leaders to look at opportunities to use the new digital tool in workplaces, schools, clubs and sporting organizations to make it easier for people to sign up and apply for the services they need.
