Kerala Assembly Elections 2026: Three-way firefight in Pala

This time, it is not just the prospect of another neck-and-neck battle between MLA Mani C. Kappan and Kerala Congress (M) president Jose K. Mani that is fueling the uncertainty in Pala.

The stakes are much higher. Because the outcome of this election could mark the culmination of years of political changes and turns that Assembly voters have witnessed since the death of Kerala Congress patriarch KM Mani. Adding to the intrigue, the fight for the Machete promises a three-way war this time; The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is fielding Shone George, one of its most aggressive leaders in central Travancore.

The machete battleground has been boiling since the 2021 Assembly elections. What started as a bitter fight between Mr. Kappen and Mr. Mani over various development projects has turned into a high-stakes duel for dominance. The KC(M), backed by the organizational machinery of the Left Democratic Front (LDF), is desperate to retake its stronghold and escape the shadows.

KC(M)’s stronghold until 2019

Pala, a KC(M) stronghold for over five decades, collapsed in 2019 when Mr. Kappan suffered a stunning defeat in a by-election. However, this was followed by a realignment of Kerala’s long-standing coalition equations. Mr Mani, the heir apparent to KC(M) founder KM Mani, regained control over the party after a vertical split and gradually steered it towards the left. In response, Mr. Kappen formed his own unit, the Kerala Democratic Party, and formed an alliance with the rival coalition.

Now, as Kerala heads for another Assembly election, the duel is back in the limelight.

LDF is relying on its deep network at the stand level to turn slim margins in local polls into a decisive advantage. Meanwhile, the KC(M) sees the NDA candidate as a wildcard who could split the anti-LDF votes. Mr George, son of former Kerala Congress veteran PC George, wields influence over panchayats annexed from the old Poonjar constituency and could potentially cut off significant support from the UDF.

UDF, on the other hand, hopes to capitalize on voter fatigue with the KC(M) and LDF government. Mr. Kappan, who lost three consecutive contests against KM Mani between 2006 and 2016, turned the tide in 2019 and is now banking on UDF dominance in eight of the 13 local bodies, including the Pala municipality.

The NDA, meanwhile, quietly began its work by promoting Mr. George on social media and appealing to Catholic voters through shared concerns about issues such as “love jihad.” But its appeal among the broader Hindu voter base depends largely on the development agenda championed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Other problems

Beyond candidate profiles, many local issues could influence undecided voters, from the Church’s stance to the crisis in the natural rubber industry to concerns about uneven development. With three high-profile candidates, shifting alliances and local concerns, Pala promises a high-octane election showdown where every vote counts.
