Poll finds most Americans expect Trump to send ground troops to Iran

A new national poll shows that nearly two-thirds of Americans think President Donald Trump will send U.S. ground troops into the fight against Iran.

The Reuters/Ipsos poll, conducted from Tuesday to Thursday, March 17-19, shows that a majority of Americans, 55 percent, say they do not support sending ground troops into action against Iran.

The release of the survey comes as the US and Israel are about to complete their third week of attacks on Iran.

Only 7 percent of respondents said they would support a large-scale strike by American ground forces, while 34 percent said they would support a more limited-scope strike by U.S. special forces.

14 percent of Republicans surveyed said they would support a major ground force operation, while 63 percent said they would support involving special forces in a ground operation. 21 percent of Republicans did not approve of the sending of American ground troops.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth refused to rule out the use of US ground forces during a briefing at the Pentagon earlier this month.

On Thursday, Trump said he would “not send troops anywhere” when asked by a reporter about his war plans.

According to the survey, which polled 1,545 adults nationwide, 37 percent of Americans approve of a war with Iran, while 59 percent oppose it.

But there is a wide partisan divide; 77% of Republicans, only 6% of Democrats and 28% of independents support the operation.
