World Athletics Indoor Championships 2026: Josh Kerr reclaims 3,000m title

Josh Kerr completed his post-injury return to the top of the global podium in thrilling fashion by winning Great Britain’s first medal at the World Athletics Indoor Championships in Poland, regaining the 3000m title.

Kerr, who won home gold in Glasgow two years ago, had her world 1500m title defense ruined by an injury in Tokyo in September.

But six months after tearing his calf during the final, Kerr showed he was back to full fitness by taking on world-class opponents as the entire squad of 1500m Olympic medalists went head-to-head.

The 28-year-old, now a three-time world champion, made his move on the final lap and there was no denying it as he held off his rivals before crossing the line in seven minutes 35.56 seconds.

American Cole Hocker, who denied Kerr the 2024 Olympic gold and won the world title in the 5,000 meters last year, bested the Briton in his only meeting over two miles this season at the Millrose Games.

However, Hocker did not respond to Kerr’s move for gold and had to settle for silver; French Yann Schrub took the bronze medal.
