Met Office names UK areas facing snow on Wednesday | Weather | News

The Met Office has announced that every part of England will see snow on Wednesday. Cold weather will hit the country next week, with snow showers possible in parts of the UK.

The forecaster has released a new forecast map for Wednesday, March 25, showing that snow and showers will fall in several areas. The Met Office said ‘much more unstable’ conditions will emerge from Wednesday, including snow at higher altitudes, coastal winds and below average temperatures. According to Met Office snow maps, areas set for up to 4cm of snow include northern Scotland (Wick, X), central Scotland (Inverness, Aberdeen, Fort William) and Northern Ireland (Belfast). The north of England (Carlisle, Manchester, Leeds) and Wales (Cardiff, Conwy) will also see snow. In its latest forecast, the Met Office said: “A more active Atlantic pattern is developing early next week, with rain spreading across northern and western areas on Monday and Tuesday, occasionally turning to snow over the Scottish Highlands. “Stronger winds are expected in the north, with coastal storms also expected at times.

“By Wednesday the UK will enter a cooler, more unstable flow from the north to the north-west, with frequent showers, some heavy, and wintry spells at higher elevations.

“Snow may reach lower levels in the north later in the day. Temperatures will be near or slightly below average.”

Met Office Chief Forecaster Steve Willington said: “While the first part of the period brought warm sunshine for many, it is not unusual to see cooler spells and even some showers in March.

“As we move into next week, a shift to a cooler northwesterly flow will result in a drop in temperature and more unstable weather, including snow in the northern hills and gusty winds at times. This pattern is completely typical for this time of year.”

This week the UK has enjoyed warmer weather, including the hottest day of the year so far on Wednesday, when temperatures reached 21°C at Goggerdan in Wales.

Temperature fluctuations are normal for this time of year; Mild conditions are replaced by cooler winds as the hours change, which will happen next weekend.
