Sen. Chris Van Hollen, D-Md., declined to answer Monday on CNN about whether he believes Iranian officials regarding President Donald Trump’s war discussions.
CNN’s Kasie Hunt asked Van Hollen a question on “The Arena with Kasie Hunt” about what she believes is telling the truth about discussions that could potentially end the war. Trump reported that the US had “very good” talks with Tehran, but Iranian state media denied any talks had taken place.
Although Van Hollen did not say whether he believed Iranian officials, he emphasized that Trump was “lying” about the war.

“Unfortunately, we’ve learned that Donald Trump has been lying to the American people all along and continues to lie to the American people, which is never a good thing,” Van Hollen said.
“Do you believe Iranian officials about the President of the United States?” Hunt asked.
“I believe that based on all available information and Donald Trump’s track record of lying to the American people during the campaign, including the big lie that he would keep us out of the war in the Middle East. He broke that promise,” Van Hollen replied.
He added: “He lied about Iran being an imminent threat to the United States. And Israel launched this attack. He lied about Iran being on the verge of getting a nuclear weapon. We know this because Tulsi Gabbard recently stated the exact opposite. And yes, we know she lied when she said the Iranians were talking to us and were about to give Donald Trump anything he wanted. Yes, that’s a lie.”

“Fair enough,” Hunt remarked.
When reached for comment, the White House referred to Van Hollen’s meeting with deported immigrant Kilmar Abrego Garcia last year.
“As someone who enjoys sipping margaritas with terrorists, Chris Van Hollen has zero credibility on this or any other issue,” White House press secretary Anna Kelly told Fox News Digital.
Fox News Digital has reached out to Van Hollen’s office for comment.
Trump announced Monday morning on Truth Social that he would delay military strikes on Iran’s power and energy infrastructure for five days after having “very good and productive discussions” with the country that could lead to a “complete and complete resolution of our hostilities.”
He also denied reports in Iranian state media that no talks had taken place in a comment to Fox Business’ Maria Bartiromo that day.

“When I said there were no talks about Iranian TV, he said it was hard to get any information from there because the US had blown up most of their infrastructure,” Bartiromo said. “So again, he wasn’t sure what Iran State Television was talking about, because he said the most recent talks took place last night with Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner.” he said.
