A judge in Georgia set bail of just $1 for a woman accused of murder after she allegedly used pills to get an abortion while about five months pregnant, which is illegal under the state’s abortion restrictions.
Alexia Moore, 31, spent nearly three weeks behind bars in coastal Camden County after her March 4 arrest after police used a warrant with language echoing the state’s abortion ban after six weeks of pregnancy.
“I think this charge is extremely problematic,” Superior Court Judge Steven Blackerby said of the murder charge at a bail hearing Monday, according to The New York Times.
“This will be a difficult charge to convict on,” the judge continued.

Blackerby set Moore’s total bond at $2,001 and ordered bond amounts of $1,000 each on the murder charge as well as two drug charges.
Moore’s case is one of the first in Georgia where a woman faces charges of terminating her pregnancy since the Peach State passed an abortion ban in 2019.
District Attorney Keith Higgins of the Brunswick Judicial Circuit did not object to the $1 bond in court Monday and told the judge that police did not contact his office before charging Moore, according to reports.
Higgins’ office will need to receive the grand jury indictment before it can bring Moore to trial.

“Today’s decision is a reminder that justice cannot be achieved through impeachment alone,” attorneys from the Georgia Public Defenders Council representing Moore said in a statement. he said.
“Our system works best when courts carefully consider the facts, uphold constitutional protections, and protect the rights of everyone who stands before them,” the statement said.
According to court records, Moore arrived at the hospital on Dec. 30 and said he was experiencing abdominal pain. He told hospital staff he was using misoprostol, an abortion-inducing drug, and the opioid painkiller oxycodone, according to an arrest warrant obtained by police in Kingsland, Georgia.
