Bentley Cricket Club shown some turf love with opening of new practice nets

South suburban cricketers are in good shape with the opening of new grass cricket nets at Wyong Reserve, Bentley.

It cost more than $100,000 and was funded by the city, State Government and Bentley Cricket Club.

Wyong Reserve is home to Bentley Cricket Club and the new facilities are only the second set of grass practice nets in the City of Canning.

The new nets, which can be configured to hold up to six pitches, are considered vital to the club’s development and long-term success.

They provide training facilities that simulate match conditions for teams playing on grass fields.

The new grass pitches are expected to attract more players to the club and help expand the youth cricket programme.

The four existing synthetic cricket nets at Wyong Reserve remain in place.

Tenants at Wyong Reserve tenants include Canning South Perth Football Club (Australian rules football) and Royals Sports Club (softball).

Other improvements at Wyong Reserve, such as new changing rooms, storage facilities, accessibility provisions and improved viewing access to the sports ground, are also being considered by the city.

Mayor Patrick Hall said clubs and community groups were the heart of Canning.

“We work hard to remove barriers and create safe, welcoming spaces for everyone, especially women and girls,” she said.

“Sports plays a huge role in our lives and the city’s support for the construction of infrastructure to meet the growing demand is very important.

“I know we are getting closer to completing the cricket season, but I believe Bentley Cricket Club will make the most of the new nets and reap the benefits they are sure to bring.”
