Iran rejects U.S. ceasefire, demands Strait of Hormuz sovereignty

Iran has no intention of meeting with the United States, but America’s proposal to end the war is being reviewed by senior officials in Tehran, the Islamic Republic’s foreign minister told state media on Wednesday, according to a new report.

According to Reuters, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi also said that the exchange of messages between the two countries through mediators “does not mean negotiations with the United States.”

Earlier on Wednesday, state media in Iran said the country would reject a US ceasefire offer and was drawing up its own list of conditions to end the war.

state broadcaster press tvCiting a senior political security official who knows the details of the offer, the news reported that Iran’s five-item counter-offer would give Tehran control of the Strait of Hormuz.

This may be a non-starter for the United States.

Speaking to the state news outlet, the official said Iran also wanted compensation for the war.

Here is the full list of Iran’s conditions, according to Press TV:

  • A complete end to the enemy’s “attacks and assassinations”.
  • Establishing concrete mechanisms to ensure that war is not re-imposed on the Islamic Republic.
  • Guaranteed and clearly defined payment of war damages and reparations.
  • The end of the war on all fronts and for all resistance groups in the region.
  • Iran’s exercise of sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz is and will remain Iran’s natural and legal right, a guarantee of the fulfillment of the other side’s commitments, and must be recognized.
