President Donald Trump praised San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie at a Cabinet meeting Thursday for “really trying” to improve the city after moderates took over the leadership.
“I know they have a mayor who’s trying hard. He’s a Democrat, but he’s trying hard,” Trump said in a clip released by CNN.
Trump said, “But we can do it much more effectively, because he can’t do what we do. He can’t take people out of the city and bring them back to the country they came from, where they were in prisons. They were allowed into prisons. There were drug dealers, the highest level of drug dealers. Murderers. 11,888 murders. We do things they can’t do.”

Trump spoke after Secretary of War Pete Hegseth at a meeting that initially discussed the war in Iran. The conversation then turned to Democrat-run cities’ fight against illegal immigration and crime.
“We can make it much safer than it already is. San Francisco — it was a great city, a great city — can quickly become a great city again,” Trump said.

Trump continued: “But you know, they’re going very slowly. I tell my friends, they’re very important people, they’re in a certain job where people make a lot of money; I hope it lasts – but they have tremendous, tremendous potential. It was one of the greatest cities in the world. Now there’s so much crime. And the mayor is really trying. A Democrat is trying again. So I talked to him. He just wants a chance. So I said, ‘We’ll give you a chance, but we can fix the problem very quickly.'”
