Sentencing for WA teacher who gave birth to student’s baby delayed by psychiatric report
A West Australian teacher who raped a schoolboy and gave birth to his baby will undergo a psychiatric evaluation ahead of sentencing later this year.
Naomi Tekea Craig, 33, was accused by child exploitation detectives late last year of persistently having sexual intercourse with a student at her school in the coastal city of Mandurah, south of Perth, between 2024 and 2025.
She appeared in court a day after her last sexual encounter with the boy in December and just weeks before she gave birth to what police say was the boy’s father on January 8.
The victim was only 13 years old at the time.
Craig pleaded guilty to two charges of indecently dealing with a child under 13, five charges of having sexual intercourse with a child over 13 and under 16, five charges of having sexual intercourse with a child under 13, one charge of persistent sexual intercourse with a child under 16, one charge of indecently dealing with a child over 13, under 16 and one charge of possessing child abuse material.
A hearing was held in the Perth District Court on Friday morning in his absence, and his lawyer Michael Tudori told the court a psychiatrist had been appointed to assess him ahead of sentencing.
“We managed to find a psychiatrist to fill out the psychiatric report,” he said.
“It was difficult to find one, but we found one, but I want a fairly long delay until July 3 to prepare the report because it needs time.”
Craig did not attend the hearing and his bail was renewed with the same conditions; these conditions included no unsupervised contact with any children other than their own and a ban on contact with the young victim.
The court previously heard that his sexual relationship with the boy began in 2024 when he was 12 years old.
Earlier this year, police confirmed a DNA test was carried out after married Craig gave birth, claiming it confirmed the victim was the baby’s father.
She is also the mother of a three-year-old boy.
He will return to court on July 3 for the hearing where the sentence will be announced.
