Children under five at risk from only consuming plant milk, say experts

A team of UK experts is not “equivalent in terms of nutrition” to any plant -based milk cow milk available in the UK.

Plant -based milk drinks, including soybean, oats and almond milk, have gained popularity in recent years.

Nutrition experts who advised the British government now published a report on the benefits and risks of milk substitutes, and some concerns about the use of products among children under five years of age.

In children between the ages of one to five, according to Nutrition Scientific Advisory Committee (SACN) experts, only the consumption of plant -based beverages is at risk of “insufficient purchases of some microbes” and toxicity of food, consumer products and environment (COT) chemicals.

And people from all age groups with these drinks may have higher sugar intake.

However, the report emphasizes that nutritional concerns can be “reduced iyle if it is strengthened by vitamin A, vitamin B12, calcium and iodine, as well as people in cow’s milk, as well as these beverages preferred vitamin A, riboflavin, B12, calcium and iodine, and these drinks prefer.

And they said typical almonds, oats and soy beverages can contribute to lower calorie and saturated fat intake with higher fiber and vitamin D intake.

However, the new report emphasizes a “potential toxicological concern ile with milk substitutes in children who follow a vegan diet until the age of five and consume too much soy.

Expert group, these children, called isoflavones, a natural compound that may be more likely to consume a high amount of consumption, he said.

However, after a vegan diet, the risk can be partially reduced by allowing children’s proteins not only from soy, but from various sources.

Sacn and Cot proposed a series of nutrition for children under five years of age, older child and adults who drink milk substitutes:

  • In case of consuming animal products, children between the ages of one and five are “preferable” to consume all or semi -filtered cow’s milk on plant -based beverages, but that sugar -free and reinforced plant -based milk is a “acceptable alternative”.
  • Mandatory or sweetened plant -based beverages are not “an acceptable alternative to cow’s milk”.
  • Sacn and Cot also “plant -based follow -up formula, ‘growing’ and other ‘walking’ drinks, including drinks, including a to three years of age, especially marketed drinks,” he said.
  • Vegan children aged one to five years should consume cow’s milk drink strengthened and sugar -free plant -based milk.
  • Soy milk is preferred as main rather than cow’s milk for vegan children aged for a to five years, because it has a higher amount of protein than almonds or oats. However, experts should provide a wide variety of protein consumption in general food and beverage consumption to avoid high isoflavon purchases linked to vegan children.
  • It is an acceptable alternative to cow’s milk strengthened and sugar -free almonds, oats and soybean beverages for children and adults.

As a result: “Almonds, oats or soybean drinks that are not available in the UK are nutrients to the milk of the cows.

“The most suitable alternative to the milk of cows varies according to the age group and people’s wider diet purchases and health concerns.”

“There are potential nutrition and toxicological concerns about plant -based beverages, especially for children between the ages of five and five, especially for those who follow the vegan diet.

“There are higher free sugar intakes and potential nutrition concerns about certain microbials (for all three plant -based beverages) and lower protein intake (for almonds and oats).”
