‘There’s Literally Nothing to Do’

A TikTok video of a University of Mississippi student detailing her reasons for dropping out has gone viral, and people are weighing in with their opinions on the situation.
Maggie Recco, who transferred to Ole Miss from Arizona before attending the University of Miami, posted a video explaining why she left Oxford, Mississippi, after a year of study.
Their complaints ranged from a lack of dining and shopping venues to social environments they found fake.
“There is literally nothing to do in Oxford,” Recco said in the video. “There’s no such thing as a destination. The only grocery store is Walmart, you can’t get there without bumping into everyone you know.”
He also complained about the lack of late-night dining options, saying the only places open after 10 p.m. were fast food restaurants and that the wait time at the drive-through was more than an hour.
He also complained about the nightlife in Oxford, saying that many venues close at 12.30 in the morning and have high entrance fees.
“You pay a minimum of $20 to get into the bar,” he said in the video, adding, “And on game days it’s much higher than that. One time it was $200 to get into the bar.”
He told a particular story about himself and his friends looking for a place to go at closing time.
“We went to this bar, they wanted $80 to get in, the bar was going to close in 30 minutes.”
He also complained about police activity in the Oxford nightlife scene, saying officers patrolled in uniform on horseback and undercover agents from alcohol control regularly raided venues.
“The square is full of police,” he said in the video, adding: “Mounted police are running around, literally looking for underage students.”
Transportation problems were another source of frustration. While the airport in Memphis is an hour and 20 minutes away, Recco said ride-sharing services are too costly. “If you’re going to take an Uber, it’s going to be around $150 just to get to the airport,” he said.
Recco also complained about what he said was the entitled attitude of many of his classmates. “Everyone is a little bit fake and spoiled and not used to being told no,” he said. “You’d think so because it’s a school in the South, but a lot of it feels fake hospitality.”
Parking tickets were another source of frustration. “I bought over $1,000 in tickets,” he said, adding that park staff enjoyed giving out tickets. “They actually hate you.”
Recco concluded his words by explaining his thoughts about the school. “The school is a summer camp for people ages 19 to 23,” he said. “This isn’t real. It’s fake.”
Recco ended the video by stating that he was warned about the school. “They were right,” he said. “And now I’m going to move to Miami so I’ll be in a city I love.”
The video received a variety of responses, some supportive, others quite negative. One commenter said he hadn’t made any friends and was having trouble adjusting to college. “I didn’t have any friends,” he said.
Another commenter questioned the public nature of the announcement. “This is your life decision,” the commenter wrote. “Quit apps and start doing something important.”
A third commenter took a more cynical approach to Recco’s educational path, which took him to three different schools, saying he should have run with “anchor gloves.” This comment aroused great interest on the site.
