Former National Crime Agency officer stole bitcoin from dark web drug dealer

A former national criminal agency officer, who seized Bitcoin from the operator of an illegal dark web market, was imprisoned for five and a half years.

NCA was investigating Silk Road 2.0, which allowed users to purchase drugs and other illegal goods after being closed by the FBI in 2013 in 2013, and in 2014 he arrested Liverpool -based Thomas White.

Intelligence officer Paul Chowles took details of White’s “pension wallet” and stole 50 Bitcoin before sending a crypto currency called Bitcoin Sisi to “Mixing” service to hide the source.

In the Liverpool Crown court, 42 -year -old Chowles was found guilty of hiding a theft, transferring a penalty property and concealing a number of crime.

Prosecutor Craig Hassall said in May 2017 that it was slightly below £ 60,000 (about $ 80,000) during theft, and Chowles has noticed about £ 145,000, but it is currently worth £ 4 million.

Chowles was rejected this month because of the criminal satisfaction arrested by NCA in 2022 because of the heavy abuse.

He thought that White, who was initially imprisoned for more than five years in 2019, managed to reach the Bitcoin wallet and remove 50 missing Bitcoin.

The 47 Bitcoin in White’s wallet were sold by NCA for about £ 500,000 and the funds paid towards a confiscation order of 1.5 million pounds against White.

However, the police and NCA started to investigate after White was not responsible for carrying 50 Bitcoin, and the usernames and passwords connected to White’s crypto currency accounts were found in Chowles’ books when arrested.

Judge David Aubrey said that Bitcoin was captured by Chowles, worth £ 470,000 and said to him: “If you hadn’t been arrested, you’d continue to receive the awards of injustice.”

“We know that criminals are trying to use the crypto currency as a way of laundering money from illegal activities, including drug trafficking and fraud.

He said: “Someone who is involved in the law enforcement officers will be extremely disappointed for everyone who can include themselves in the guilt they are assigned to investigate and prevention.

“This case should show that no one is above the law with the most obvious terms. When it is understood that one of NCA’s own officers stole Bitcoin, they made comprehensive investigations to reveal a trace of evidence that Chowles tried to hide. This was fully supported by.

He continued: “When designing a plan that he believed to cover his tracks, he took advantage of his position in this investigation to list his own pockets. He was wrong.

“I want to make sure that he has expert officers who have the experience and expertise of monitoring the movement of funds designed to prevent the detection of Mersexia police.

“First of all, our officers have the determination to be sure that criminals do not make any profits without breaking the laws, but to provide their families to other honest and hardworking members of public affairs.”
