7-month-old girl killed by stray bullet in Brooklyn shooting, police say

A 7-month-old girl was killed by a stray bullet when a gunman on a motorcycle opened fire on a Brooklyn street Wednesday afternoon, police said.

According to the New York City Police Department, as two people on a moped approached the intersection of Moore Street and Humboldt Street in Brooklyn, the person in the back fired a gun multiple times and a stray bullet struck a teenage girl on the sidewalk.

NYPD identified the 7-month-old girl as Kaori Patterson-Moore of Brooklyn. He was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The individuals fled the scene by getting on a motorcycle. NYPD said that one person of interest in the incident was in custody, and for the second suspect, police were asking for help from the public to identify the people involved.

According to police, the shooting was believed to be gang-related and the child was an unintended victim.

“There are no words that can heal the heartbreak this family is feeling right now,” New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani said at a news conference. he said. “A life that had just begun was suddenly destroyed.”

The conflict took place at around 13.20 on a street corner where many adults and children had gathered. Police said there were no other injuries related to the attack.

Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said the motorcycle sped off after the shooting but crashed into an oncoming car two blocks away. He added that both drivers fell out of the vehicle and the collision caused the passenger to lose both of his shoes.

Police said one of the men on the motorcycle was hospitalized with injuries and was being held in police custody for an unrelated investigation. Investigators believe the man fits the description of the alleged attacker due to his clothing and appearance.

The other man ran away and had not been found by police as of Wednesday evening.

Police said no gun was found at the scene, but two shell casings were found.

“This is a terrible day in our city, a tragedy that truly shocks the conscious,” Tisch said at the press conference. “As a mother, I cannot even imagine the pain this family feels or the pain they now carry with them. It is indescribable.”

Investigators reviewed neighborhood security cameras and tracked the moped’s movement after the shooting, Tisch said.

Mamdani said Wednesday’s murder is a reminder that more work needs to be done to reduce gun violence.
