Following the ideals of Jagjivan Ram, Congress to secure justice for downtrodden, says party leaders

The Uttar Pradesh Congress in Lucknow on Saturday, April 4, 2026, organized a seminar ahead of the birth anniversary of former Deputy Chief Minister Jagjivan Ram, where leaders pointed out the efforts of the late leader and the Congress party to secure justice for the oppressed and poor. Jagjivan Ram’s daughter and former Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar addressed the meeting as the chief guest. During the function, the UP Congress also felicitated current and former Members of Parliament (MPs) and Members of Legislative Assembly (MLAs) belonging to Scheduled Castes as well as individuals from Scheduled Castes who have done exemplary work in social service.

“His primary focus was his participation in the freedom struggle, his role in mentoring Dalits and his role in kindling patriotism in the hearts of the poor and Dalits. As the country’s Agriculture Minister, he supported the Green Revolution, a plan to eliminate hunger in India, and emphasized the adoption of improved seeds, chemical fertilizers and modern farming techniques, leading to a significant increase in food grain production. He worked under the Congress to ensure justice for the oppressed and the poor,” he said. Ms. Kumar adds that untouchability and discrimination wrap themselves like vines around the social tree, constantly weakening it, encouraging people to rise above it and focus on the development of the country.

“Babu Jagjivan Ram worked to ensure justice for the oppressed and the underprivileged to whom we pay our respects today. Today, on the eve of his birth anniversary, we promise to follow the ideals of Babu Jagjivan Ram and play our part in the development of the country and the society. We all must work together and if we do this, the victory of the Congress Party in the 2027 elections is certain. We are witnessing atrocities of the highest kind against the SCs, and the society under the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government every section,” said Uttar Pradesh Congress President Ajay Rai.

Mr. Rai added that the Congress is the only party in the country that works for the oppressed and fights for the inclusive, pluralistic idea of India. The seminar on Jagjivan Ram and his contribution is being seen as another effort by the Congress to reach out to the Dalit population in the state, which will go to polls early next year, with leaders highlighting Dalit leadership during the Congress era.
