The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced Saturday that an immigration detainer has been initiated against an illegal immigrant accused of leading Ohio deputies on a high-speed chase that resulted in a crash that killed a pregnant 17-year-old girl and her unborn child and injured another woman.
Tarsem Singh, an Indian citizen, was recently indicted on charges of vehicular homicide, involuntary manslaughter and reckless homicide, according to DHS.
He is being held on $1 million bail, and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has filed a detainer with Ohio authorities.
The fatal Feb. 16 chase was initiated when a Darke County Sheriff’s Office deputy noticed an SUV going approximately 25 mph over the speed limit.

Authorities said the sheriff’s deputy was trying to catch up to the SUV allegedly driven by Singh and accelerated the vehicle to 100 miles per hour.
When the deputy activated his emergency lights to initiate a traffic stop, the SUV sped away and drove approximately five miles at a speed of up to 194 mph before crashing into an eastbound vehicle, according to the sheriff’s office.
The deputy immediately reported the crash and checked for injuries, finding Singh’s passenger, 17-year-old pregnant Ashlee Holmes, dead after being ejected from the vehicle. WDTN reported.

Singh was taken to Miami Valley Hospital by CareFlight.
The female driver of the eastbound vehicle was conscious and injured and was taken to Reid Hospital in Richmond, Indiana, in Union City, according to the sheriff’s office.
Authorities said the pursuit lasted less than three minutes from the time it was initiated until the crash.
It’s unclear why Holmes was in Singh’s vehicle.
“This is yet another tragic reminder of why illegal aliens should not drive on America’s roads,” DHS deputy secretary Lauren Bis wrote in a statement. “A 17-year-old woman and her unborn child died as a result of the reckless actions of this illegal alien.”

Singh allegedly entered the country illegally from California’s southern border in February 2017 and was arrested before a judge granted him bail.

Bis said the lawsuit was filed against Singh to ensure that the newly filed ICE detainee “is never released and allowed to get behind the wheel to risk any more innocent lives.”
