NFL news: Jets now hold longest playoff drought in North American sports

Misery loves friendship, but unfortunately the New York Jets don’t have friends anymore.
With the Buffalo Sabers making the playoffs for the first time in 14 seasons, ending the longest playoff drought in NHL history, the Jets are now the only team with the longest playoff drought of any team in North America’s major professional sports.
The Jets last lost to the Pittsburgh Steelers in the AFC championship game in the 2010 season.
Barring a miraculous comeback, it seems unlikely the Jets will make the playoffs next season.

In Aaron Glenn’s first season as head coach, the team went 3-14 and became the first team in NFL history to throw no interceptions for an entire season. At the trade deadline, they traded star defensemen Sauce Gardner and Quinnen Williams in exchange for draft picks.
Justin Fields played in just nine games for the Jets due to injury after signing last offseason with hopes he could develop into a starting quarterback. Backup Tyrod Taylor started four games before getting injured, and the team was forced to start undrafted rookie Brady Cook for four games.
The Jets overhauled their quarterback room as they look to upgrade their equipment. They traded Fields to the Kansas City Chiefs and Taylor became a free agent. Cook remained on the roster.

The Jets acquired Geno Smith, who spent four seasons with the team after being drafted in 2013, from the Las Vegas Raiders as their starting quarterback.
Smith had a solid season with the Raiders last year, leading the NFL with 17 tackles despite missing two games due to injury. He completed 67.4% of his passes for 3,205 yards with 19 touchdowns and 17 interceptions.

For the Jets to end their playoff drought, they’re hoping their two first-round picks in this year’s draft (No. 2 overall and 16th overall) and Smith and the rest of the free-agent class can turn things around.
