Marles said that Arnavenes defended Yang in a broad speech with Chinese President Xi Jinping this week, and would continue to force the government to release, and would remain on certain ways to achieve it.

“We are in coincidence to continue to bring this case to the agenda, but it is also important that we are cautious in our conversation about it,” Marles said.
“Obviously, this is a result of the consular case, and these issues are sensitive, but you can see what the government has done about how we can manage other consular cases for the last few years.”
After a bitter diplomatic disagreement between Marles, Canberra and Beijing, he may have referred to the Australian journalist Cheng Lei, who was custody of China for three years before his release.
Kylie Moore-Bilbert and Sean Turnell are among the other high-profile Australians imprisoned abroad for espionage and national security charges.
