Young mother, teen, baby killed in Easter egg hunt tragedy

Three people, including a 10-month-old girl, died when strong winds toppled a tree during an Easter egg hunt in Germany on Sunday morning, according to authorities.
About 50 people from a nearby residential facility for new mothers, pregnant women and children were participating in an egg hunt in a forested area near the town of Satrupholm when a 30-foot tree fell on them around 11 a.m., police said in a statement.
Police said four people were trapped under the tree.

First responders arrived at the scene and first treated a 21-year-old woman and a 16-year-old girl, but both died at the scene.
The woman’s 10-month-old daughter later died in the hospital.
The seriously injured 18-year-old woman was taken to hospital by helicopter.
The residential facility is part of the publicly funded child welfare system that supports pregnant women and new mothers who need assistance, according to its website.

Following the fatal incident on Sunday, grief counselors were sent to the scene.
Photos taken from the scene show two of the victims covered in white sheets, while numerous Easter eggs can be seen scattered on the ground.
The German meteorological service put the region on a high wind warning.

Officials from the Schleswig-Holstein region, where the facility is located, said they were “deeply shaken” by the Easter tragedy.
Regional Governor Daniel Günther, Minister of Internal Affairs Magdalena Finke and Minister of Youth and Family Aminata Touré said in a joint statement to the dpa news agency: “Our thoughts are with the family members of the dead, the injured and all those who had to experience this terrible event.” he said.
