Trump news at a glance: president’s deadline for Iran and threats against civilian targets loom | Trump administration

Donald Trump was asked at a press conference on Monday whether his war against Iran was slowing down. His answer: “I can’t tell you.”

The US president’s comments come as diplomatic negotiations aimed at stopping war in the Middle East falter.

At the beginning of the press conference, Trump said Iran “could be taken out overnight, and it could happen tomorrow night.” He also reiterated that the regime will be given until 8 pm ET on Tuesday to reopen the Strait of Hormuz or face a barrage of attacks on energy facilities and bridges.

Pentagon secretary Pete Hegseth, who was at Trump’s side at the news conference and served with the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Gen. Daniel Caine, said “today will be the largest volume of strikes since the first day of the operation” under the president.

“Tomorrow is even more than today,” he added.
