UCC, ONOE are BJP’s Ideological Planks: Ramchander Rao

Hyderabad: Telangana BJP President N Ramchander Rao on Tuesday supported the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), asserting that it is a long-standing ideological commitment of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and is necessary to ensure justice for women and marginalized communities.
Referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent statements that there have been “serious discussions” on issues such as UCC and One Nation One Election (ONOE), Rao said, “The esteemed prime minister’s statement that UCC, that is, Uniform Civil Code and ONOE will be implemented soon, because these are our ideological plan.”
He underlined that the BJP has consistently supported fundamental structural reforms since its early days. “In fact, since the Jan Sangh days, the BJP believed in the abrogation of Article 370, followed by the Uniform Civil Code and recently the ONOE. These three major issues have been in the party’s programme, and this is also in our manifesto,” Rao said.
Drawing attention to the latest developments, Rao pointed out the efforts of states to implement the UCC framework. “So Uniform Civil Code is a must. Some states have already implemented it – Uttarakhand and some other states are trying to implement Uniform Civil Code in their states,” he added.
Rao also stated that the proposal was supported by the legislature and the judiciary and linked it with the earlier reforms undertaken by the Centre. “And as we have seen, triple talaq was also abolished by the Narendra Modiji government. I think this is the first step in moving towards a Uniform Civil Code,” Rao said. he said.
Referring to judicial observations, he said, “The Supreme Court on many occasions, including that of Shah Bano’s case, the famous Shah Bano’s case, they have asked the government to implement Uniform Civil Code, which is envisaged in our Constitution.”
Emphasizing the broader aim, Rao said, “Therefore, I think that the Single Civil Code should be implemented in this country to ensure justice to women, children and many communities deprived of certain rights.”
