Former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie He was an advisor to Donald Trump in the pastHe said even the president didn’t believe his own lies about the 2020 election being stolen from him.

Christie, who has emerged as a Trump critic, said Monday at an event for the Harvard Kennedy School Institute of Politics that the president’s claims that the 2020 election was rigged in favor of former President Joe Biden were “lies.”

The Republican politician said, “The nonsense put forward by Donald Trump about the 2020 elections is fiction. These are imaginary.” “Meanwhile, there I was in 2020. He didn’t even believe it. He didn’t believe it. He thought he had lost it. And he was afraid he was going to lose everything during that fall.”

Trump began sowing doubt about the integrity of the 2020 election months before Election Day. In August 2020, Trump claimed that mail-in ballots “are a very dangerous thing for this country, because they are fraudulent,” adding that they are “fraudulent in many cases.”

To this day, Trump has publicly maintained his baseless claim that the 2020 election was fraudulent and has attacked mail-in voting ahead of the midterm elections. This is despite reports that he and his family recently used this method to vote in special elections in his new home state of Florida.

Last week, in a legally dubious move, Trump issued an executive order banning the U.S. Postal Service from sending absentee or mail-in ballots to any voter who is not on the list of approved U.S. citizens he has ordered the Department of Homeland Security to collect.

Asked at the Harvard event whether the country would hold “fair and equal” elections this November and in 2028, Christie insisted: “We’ve never had fair and equal elections, so we’ll do it again.”

Christie supported Trump in the 2016 presidential election after suspending his own candidacy. He again supported Trump in the 2020 election but later opposed him.

At the time, Christie said in an interview with CNN that he would run for president again in June 2023, saying he was “wrong” about Trump. He left the race early.

Christie now appears regularly on ABC News this week He frequently criticizes Trump to offer his political analysis.

The former governor accused the GOP of “not having principles” at Monday’s event.

“Even people who accept some of the things the president has done, if you’re really honest with yourself, you know it’s not based on principle,” Christie said.

“He wakes up every morning and tries to figure out what is in his best interest to do that day and that day only,” he added.
