U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents shot a man in California on Tuesday who allegedly “used a gun on his vehicle” and tried to run over a police officer, the Department of Homeland Security said.

According to authorities, agents were conducting a targeted vehicle stop in the town of Patterson to arrest Carlos Ivan Mendoza Hernandez, an alleged 18th Street Gang member wanted for questioning in connection with a murder in El Salvador.

“When officers approached the car, the wanted gang member used his vehicle at gunpoint in an attempt to run over a police officer,” said Todd Lyons, acting director of ICE.

“After their training, our officers took defensive shots to protect themselves, their fellow agents and the public,” Lyons said. “The illegal alien was taken to a local hospital.”
