López took a step higher and inward. The ball went over Jonah Heim’s glove, hit the back boundary, and Heim was able to pick it up and throw it to second base, allowing the runner to steal second base. The shooting happened very late, but the fireworks started immediately after the shooting.
Soler appeared to take exception to the field and lunged at López. While Soler was throwing haymakers, López was throwing punches to fend him off. Soler was brought down by Braves’ manager Walt Weiss before major damage could be done, and López was forced out of the fray.
The Angels player received a standing ovation as he walked back to the dugout following his immediate ejection.
“I love Soler. We were teammates here,” Weiss said. “But this is a big guy and so I felt like I had to stand him up because he’s going to hurt someone. And that was my instinct, to go in there and get Jorge up, yeah, because he was on the warpath.”
Weiss was an assistant coach for the Braves in 2021 when the Braves won the World Series. Soler was the World Series MVP that year. He and López were teammates in 2024.

“It’s a shame the situation and the way things are going,” López said through an interpreter. to MLB.com. “There was never any intention on my part to hit him. So again, it’s a shame.”

Soler hit a home run off López in the first inning. He is 14/23 against López all-time with five home runs and three doubles.
“Obviously I have good numbers against him,” Soler said. “After I ran down the field and then got hit by a pitch, it missed very high and close to my head. You can’t miss like that at this level.”
Weiss said he understands the frustration.
“I know it didn’t look good because of the home runs Soler threw against Lópey, and he hit a homer, hit him. It didn’t look good,” Weiss said. “Lópey doesn’t pitch to him. I don’t let our pitchers pitch to people just because they can’t get them out. Our job is to get them out. But I understand why Soler is upset. And he’s a really mild-mannered guy. So I think the switch has turned in his favor.”

“There was no intention there. I just think Lópey was trying to roll over because he had a hard time getting him out. But he’s definitely not trying to hit him.”
