Swalwell halts governor bid as pressure builds over mounting allegations

Rep. Eric Swalwell said in a statement published on X that he is suspending his campaign for governor of California, citing personal issues and ongoing allegations.
“I am suspending my gubernatorial campaign,” Swalwell wrote. “On behalf of my family, staff, friends and supporters, I am deeply sorry for the misjudgments I made in my past.

“I will fight the serious, false allegations that have been made, but this is my fight, not a campaign’s,” he added.

The decision comes as pressure mounts over sexual assault allegations and lawmakers from both parties are calling on him to drop out of the race and resign from Congress.
