Supreme Court seeks responses of Centre, States and Union Territories on PIL for implementation of Right to Education

The Supreme Court on Monday, April 13, 2026, sought response from the Centre, States and All Union Territories on the Public Interest Litigation (PIL) seeking implementation of the Right to Education (RTE) law, which mandates free and compulsory education for children aged 6 to 14 years.

A BenchThe bench, comprising Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi, also considered the submissions of a lawyer representing PIL petitioner Haripriya Patel, who sought implementation of the new education policy in all States and Union Territories in the country.

“We are issuing notices. We want to look into the matter,” the Chief Justice of India said.
