At least 16 people were injured when a former student opened fire with a shotgun in a school shooting in Türkiye.
Private security forces were dispatched after the brutal attack on Ahmet Koyuncu Vocational and Technical Anatolian High School in Şanlıurfa’s Siverek district on Tuesday.
Governor Hasan Sildak said in a statement to the local press that the 19-year-old gunman committed suicide with his gun while the police were trying to catch him.
‘He committed suicide when he was cornered by the police,’ the governor said. ‘We have evacuated the school and will conduct a full investigation into this tragic incident,’ he added.
Sildak said the attacker was a former student of the school and entered the school grounds before shooting randomly. The governor added that the attacker attended the school for a year when he was in the ninth grade.
He also confirmed that the attacker had no prior criminal record and that the school had previously been classed as safe by police.

Sildak said that following the incident, the injured students and teachers were hospitalized, and five of them were later transferred to facilities in Şanlıurfa city center for further treatment.

One of the eyewitnesses of the incident told local news source Turkiye Today that the suspect entered the high school garden with a long-barreled gun before opening fire.
‘He first opened fire on the garden and then directly on the school,’ the witness said.
Another eyewitness told local media that he saw a young man aged 17-18.
‘As soon as he entered the front door, he started shooting with the long-barreled gun in his hand,’ he said.
‘He first shot left and right, then at the school. Then he ran into the school. He shot directly at everyone he encountered inside.
‘Then the students screamed and everyone ran away.’
