Two officers charged after pregnant woman and unborn baby killed in collision | UK | News

Two police officers have been charged over the death of a heavily pregnant woman and her unborn baby when they were struck by a police car in south-east London in 2024, the Crown Prosecution Service said.
A Met Officer and former Met officer have been charged following a collision in Eltham, south-east London, in October 2024.
A 38-year-old pregnant woman was driving her car at the time of the collision. Her unborn baby died at the scene. He later died in hospital due to his injuries.
PC Chris Johnson was charged with causing death by dangerous driving and former PC Danny Tomkins was charged with dangerous driving.
The charges follow an investigation by the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC).
Both men will appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, May 28.
Detective Acting Superintendent James Derham, who leads the force in Greenwich, said: “Our thoughts are with the woman’s family and friends, who continue to grieve the loss of her and her unborn child. “This was a truly horrific and heartbreaking incident.
“The IOPC conducted an extensive and complex investigation and we worked closely with them as the investigations progressed. Following this process, an officer and a former officer were charged.
“It is important that nothing is said that could now prejudice the court proceedings that will follow, so it would be inappropriate to comment further at this stage.”
