Good morning, Nick Visser I’m here to take over. Let’s get to the point.
Matt Canavan defends Coalition immigration policy
Ima Caldwell
Nationals leader, Matt CanavanHe argued that the coalition’s planned crackdown on immigration was “fair and reasonable” and that immigrants would understand this policy.
Asked at 7.30 last night how Australia’s immigrant communities would view the plan, Canavan spoke of the “arduousness” of the naturalization process his Italian grandparents experienced in the 1950s and his own highly publicized section 44 supreme court citizenship saga (which he said ultimately proved he was a “dinky-di Aussie”). He said:
It’s fair and reasonable that we set high standards for joining the club of Australians, and I’m sure the expats here today want to see that…
We now have a Government that has its head in the sand and has clearly not listened to the Australian people who want change.
Canavan claimed support for Australia’s migration program was “falling off a cliff”.
When asked again by the show’s host Sarah Ferguson about the specific wording of the policy, which was described as “discriminatory”, Canavan said:
I think we need to distinguish between values…
We should not discriminate against colour, religion, sexuality or gender, but of course… we should discriminate against people who do not support democracy, who claim to support terrorism or violence, who do not believe in equality between men and women. I don’t want people with this view in our country.
Canavan reached for a literary quote: “Having good fences means good neighbors.”
Ferguson noted:
I will comment that the Robert Frost line in this poem is presented in irony.
But we will come back to this with many other questions another day, thank you for joining us…
