Virginia Tech spring game delayed after skydiver gets stuck on scoreboard

A man parachuting into a Virginia Tech spring football game became stranded in the air after his parachute got caught in the scoreboard in a harrowing incident at Lane Stadium on Saturday.

The parachutist tried to head towards the field but was working against the wind. The skydiver’s parachute became wedged at the top of the scoreboard, leaving him suspended in the air and causing a delay of the game as emergency personnel rushed to respond.

Emergency personnel used a crane to remove the paratrooper from the scoreboard.

“We are grateful to report that the skydiver was safely secured and is currently stable. Our primary focus remains their well-being,” Virginia Tech said. social media.

“We extend our sincere thanks to first responders, event staff and medical personnel for their prompt, coordinated and professional response.”

Virginia Tech football enters its first season under head coach James Franklin.

The team hired Franklin after firing Brent Pry following an 0-3 start. After firing Pry, the team finished the season 3-9 with a 3-6 record.

The Hokies went 10-4 in 2016 and 9-4 in 2017, but have been a mostly middling team since then, finishing above .500 just twice in the 2018 season.

Penn State fired Franklin last season after three straight losses; It was a skid that ended in a 30-24 overtime loss at home to Oregon, and the team never recovered.

The team suffered its second defeat on the road, losing 42-37 to UCLA, which entered the match with a 0-4 lead. The third loss dropped Penn State to 3-3, falling 22-21 at home to Northwestern. Franklin was fired a day later.

Franklin was largely successful at Penn State during the regular season, going 104-45, but never won the national championship. Franklin won the Rose Bowl in 2022, the Cotton Bowl in 2019 and the Fiesta Bowl in 2017.

The veteran coach, who dates back to Franklin’s three seasons at Vanderbilt, is 8-7 in bowl games.

Franklin will try to turn things around at Virginia Tech.
