Iconic UK company plunges into administration – in business since 1809 | UK | News

Denby Pottery announced it would cease all production and lay off a further 49 workers after going into administration earlier this year. The company has been in business since 1809 but is currently struggling to find a buyer amid “troublesome times” and “tremendous financial difficulties”.

Administrators were appointed at the end of March and despite “extensive efforts” they were unable to find a buyer for Denby’s manufacturing operations. However, there is still a possibility that other parts of the company will be acquired after 217 years of business experience.

Tony Wright, joint director of Denby Group, said: “This is yet another very difficult day for skilled workers in Denby and we understand how devastating this news will be for those affected and their families.

“Unfortunately, despite our intense efforts, we were unable to find a buyer for the manufacturing activities and had to make this difficult decision.

“We remain in discussions with relevant parties regarding other parts of the business and continue to do everything we can to support affected employees through this process.”

On March 31, the UK’s Denby Group of Companies applied for administration, appointing FRP Advisory to manage the process.

The notice was intended as a measure to give Denby a period of stability while it explored options for finding a strategic investment partner aligned with the company’s long-term vision.

Many people reacted to the news on social media. One person wrote: “This is terrible news. How can a company that is so amazing (from product quality to amazing customer service) and has such an incredible legacy be so threatened? Will share this widely and now make some acquisitions.”
