Tesla To Expand Supercharging Network In India: Company Official

New Delhi : American electric car maker Tesla on Friday said it will expand its charging network, including superchargers, across major hubs in India in a bid to speed up its drive in the country. The company, which has made its much-awaited entry into India and launched the Model Y, on Wednesday launched its second model, the three-row, six-seater SUV Model YL, priced at Rs 61.99 lakh and is also intensifying the expansion of its charging network to address customers’ range anxiety.

“We already have five supercharging stations in India that we have built according to the lifestyle of our customers, where they go to work, shop, dine and travel,” Tesla India Managing Director Sharad Agarwal told reporters here.

He further added, “The coming months will see us deploying charging infrastructure around major hubs like Delhi, Chandigarh, Jaipur, Chennai, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Mumbai and Pune.” he said.

Agarwal added that these are the cities where Tesla will build its charging infrastructure (superchargers and destination chargers) to enable charging and reduce people’s range anxiety.

Noting that Tesla not only produces cars but also builds the “world’s largest charging infrastructure”, Tesla said that the company has “more than 8,100 charging stations, which means more than 80,000 superchargers have been installed.”

Stating that these have 99.95 percent uptime, Agarwal said, “This means that when you go to a Tesla charging station, you will always find it working. This is the technology that we are bringing to India as well.”

He further said: “We are building the same supercharging infrastructure in India to offer the same international experience, the same ownership experience that we offer to our customers.”

Emphasizing the importance of providing home charging service to drive EV adoption in India, Agarwal said, “We have to focus on this and today, we have developed the capacity where we can install home charging system in any city, any state in the country.”

He said the company currently has three experience centers in India, namely Delhi, Mumbai and Gurugram, since the company started its journey in India with the opening of the first Tesla Experience Center in Mumbai in July last year.

“We have also expanded our service to two stations, one in Gurugram and the other in Mumbai. We have also recently started our service and body shop in Pune and will also open service and body shop centers in Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad and Ahmedabad this quarter.”

Adopting the direct-to-consumer model, Tesla has so far delivered its cars to 21 states of India.
