Trump picks former Republican congressman to be ambassador to Australia after 17-month vacancy | Australia news

The White House nominated former Republican member of the US House of Representatives, David Brat. Become Australia’s next ambassador.

Brat represented Virginia in Congress and served two terms before being defeated by a Democrat in a close race in 2018. He is currently vice president for labor relations at Liberty University in Virginia.

In the US, ambassadors must be approved by the Senate.

The post has been vacant for a year and a half after former ambassador Caroline Kennedy leaves office in November 2024.
