A major supermarket chain with around 2,400 stores across the UK will close a branch in the city within weeks. The Co-op will close its long-running convenience store on Thurston Road in Hillington, Glasgow, in mid-June after trading in the south end for two decades.

The closure comes as the retailer’s lease on the unit expires this year and the landlord has claimed the property back, leaving the business unable to continue operating on the site.

Bosses have informed staff of the decision and are now prioritizing support for colleagues, but it is not yet clear whether any jobs will be lost or workers will be seconded to other local branches. This news sparked concern among the dedicated workforce and regular customers who have frequented the store for years.

While the retail giant operates a huge national network covering more than 300 locations across Scotland, it has confirmed that this particular site will be removed from its portfolio.

The company said it maintained a strong presence in the region despite the closure, with around 30 stores continuing to serve the wider Glasgow postal area.

A Co-op spokesman said: “Co-op is committed to serving and supporting local communities with around 30 stores operating in the Glasgow postal area.

“Unfortunately, we cannot remain in this position. Our priority now is to provide full support to our colleagues inquiring and we thank the community for their support of this store.”

The Hillington branch opened nearly 20 years ago and has become a staple for those living in the area. Scottish Sun.

The news comes at a time of pressure on the high street, with many other retailers also announcing they will close in Scotland due to expiring leases or changing business priorities.

The Co-op continues to operate dozens of stores across Greater Glasgow but has confirmed it cannot secure a future at the Thurston Road site.

Local shoppers expressed disappointment at the loss of the convenient neighborhood store, but the chain stressed its continued commitment to the wider city. The branch is planned to close its shutters for the last time in mid-June.
