Macron’s cheeky swipe after King Charles joked America would be speaking French if it was not for Britain during Trump dinner

Emmanuel Macron published a sarcastic response to King Charles’ joke, which left his guests in a difficult situation by insulting Donald Trump at a dinner at the White House.

The monarch’s statement came after Trump claimed at the World Economic Forum in January that Europeans would now speak “German and a little bit of Japanese” had it not been for America’s intervention in the Second World War.

But Charles was quick to reverse the historical script before the assembled dignitaries in Washington.

‘Recently, Mr. President, you said that without the United States, European countries would speak German. ‘Dare I say you’ll be speaking French without us?’ These sarcastic words of the ruler made the audience burst into laughter.

This light-hearted barb did not go unnoticed in Paris. Macron responded within hours, joking on social media: ‘That would be so classy!’

“If one day… see you at the Francophone Summit,” the Élysée Palace added.

But behind the humor lies a sharp historical reference dating back centuries.

The king was believed to be referring to Britain’s decisive victory over France in the Seven Years’ War, a sprawling global conflict that reshaped the balance of power in North America.

Macron had a playful response to King Charles, who jokingly told Trump that without the British language, the US would speak French.

At the time, France controlled large swathes of land known as ‘New France’ across the continent, while Britain was engaged in a fierce struggle for colonial dominance.

The war, which included Prussia and spread across Europe, India, and America, was fueled in part by what Larousse describes as “the Franco-British conflict over the establishment of a colonial empire in India and America.”

Ultimately, Britain prevailed, asserting naval superiority and tightening its grip on key regions.

Increasing losses, King Louis XV of France. It forced Louis to seek peace with England.

The conflict officially ended with the Treaty of Paris, which significantly redrew the map.

Under the terms of the treaty, France ceded almost all of its territory in North America to Britain, retaining only the small islands of Saint-Pierre and Miquelon and limited fishing rights.

Louisiana had already been transferred to Spain last year.

The result was a seismic shift in influence, with Britain emerging as the dominant colonial power in North America.

Forty years later, in 1801, Napoleon regained control of Louisiana from Spain.

Two years later, France sold the region to the United States with the Louisiana Purchase.

Macron’s flippant response to Charles’ historic joke came just two days after Trump and First Lady Melania Trump welcomed Charles and Queen Camilla to the White House, and it didn’t take long for the President to violate royal protocol.

After arriving on the South Lawn of the White House for a reception with the President and First Lady, the royal walked up to the couple and exchanged jokes.

Trump shook hands firmly with the King. The First Lady kissed the Queen on both cheeks.

Afterwards, the couples chatted and smiled while taking a souvenir photo. But in the background are new security concerns, sparked by a gunman breaking into the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner on Saturday evening.

After the photos were taken, the group headed to the main building of the White House to drink tea in the Green Room and tour the historic beehives on the South Lawn.

After turning inward, Trump tapped the King on the shoulder in a sign of affection, breaking royal protocol. The most important unwritten rule is to never initiate physical contact with a royal.

But Trump didn’t get the memo despite extensive royal protocol preparation.

He gently touched King Charles’ right arm as he led him to the gates of the White House.

“This touch on the arm as he walked in also seemed to be a more political gesture,” body language expert Judi James told the Daily Mail.
