Trainee driver sends bus into River Seine near Paris: reports

A driver in training triggered a major rescue operation on Thursday when he crashed into a parked car and veered off the road before sending a bus hurtling into the Seine River near Paris, the BBC and Reuters reported.
All four people on board were pulled to safety as more than 90 firefighters, divers and emergency crews responded, along with boats and a helicopter, authorities said.
The cause of the crash is under investigation and drug and alcohol tests came back negative.

The incident occurred as the driver was nearing the end of practical training in Juvisy-sur-Orge, France, about 20 kilometers south of Paris, transport officials told the BBC.
Authorities said the bus missed a turn near the riverbank, instead continuing straight and crashing into the Seine River after sweeping a parked car into the water, Reuters reported.
Dramatic footage shows the bus being partially submerged as rescue workers surround the bus, with some people on top of the vehicle and others working in the water below.

Eyewitnesses described a chaotic response; One of them said he felt “every firefighter in the department” arriving as bystanders threw life preservers into the river before first responders intervened.
