Alex Zanardi: Ex-F1 driver and Paralympic champion dies aged 59

Former Formula 1 pilot and Paralympic champion Alex Zanardi passed away at the age of 59.

Both of the Italian pilot’s legs were amputated after his motor racing accident at Germany’s Lausitzring track in 2001.

He raced for Jordan, Minardi and Lotus in F1 in the early 1990s, then moved to the Cart championship in the United States, winning the series in 1997 and 1998.

Following his injury, he took up slope cycling and won two gold medals at the Paralympic Games in London in 2012, and four years later he did the same in Rio de Janeiro.

Zanardi’s family said, “It is with deep sadness that the family announces the death of Alessandro Zanardi, which occurred suddenly last evening, May 1.” he said.

“Alex passed away peacefully, surrounded by the love of his family and friends.

“The family extends their sincere gratitude to everyone who has shown their support at this time and asks that their grief and privacy be respected during this time of mourning.”
