Heavy rains lash parts of Kerala; IMD issues ‘orange alert’ in four districts

Heavy rains lashed parts of Kerala on Saturday, prompting the IMD to issue an ‘orange alert’ in four districts of the state in the afternoon.

The India Meteorological Department has issued a three-hour ‘orange alert’ for Ernakulam, Thrissur, Idukki and Malappuram districts from 2.30 pm.

In addition, thunderstorms accompanied by strong winds with speeds of up to 50 km per hour are predicted in some parts of these districts.

Earlier this week, IMD had predicted the possibility of rain accompanied by lightning and winds of 40-50 km per hour in some parts of the state by May 3.

‘Orange alert’ indicates very heavy rainfall ranging from 11cm to 20cm.

Meanwhile, the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) said that high levels of ultraviolet (UV) radiation were recorded in the state till 1 pm on Saturday.
According to data shared by KSDMA, UV levels above eight requiring orange alert were reported in Konni in Pathanamthitta and Idukki in Munnar.

Additionally, UV levels of six to seven, corresponding to yellow alert, were recorded at nine locations across the state.
