Major UK shoe retailer closes all high street shops – in business since 1966 | UK | News

One of Britain’s leading footwear retailers has closed its last stores in the country after more than 60 years on the high street. Mostyn McKenzie has confirmed that its last store in Perth, Scotland, will be closed.

By the end of today, the store will close permanently, leaving shoppers just hours away from bargaining. The store confirmed to The Sun that today will be its last day of in-store business. It was founded in 1966 and initially operated branches across the UK, including Edinburgh, Broughty Ferry and Tenterden in Kent.

The shoe store “offers an extensive selection of brands like Gabor, Rieker, Josef Seibel and more and specializes in offering comfort, quality and style.”

All other Mostyn McKenzie stores have already closed. The business even closed its flagship Aberdeen store in 2023.

General manager Graeme McKenzie said the decision to close was made due to rising costs. Speaking to The Courier, he said: “Retail on the high street is becoming increasingly difficult.”

He added: “Costs have increased, shopping habits have changed, we’re seeing the number of visitors to Perth decrease significantly and our costs increase.”

He also said the store never fully recovered from Covid.

Mostyn McKenzie has launched a clearance sale with up to 70% off all online stock.

The website says: “We pride ourselves on the high standards of service we provide to our customers. Over the years we have built up a loyal customer base from all over Scotland and beyond.

“It is our top priority to strive to offer our customers quality, value for money, comfort and style. We hope you will be pleased with your experience with us.”

The most recent post on the Facebook page is from January 16, when the brand announced it was closing its Broughty Ferry store.

It reads: “Sadly after 25 years at Broughty Ferry Mostyn McKenzie is closing, our last day is January 31st. Until then we are running a huge sale with up to 50% off all stock. Literally everything must go!!! Come along and grab the last chance to snag a bargain for yourself. We would like to take this opportunity to personally thank the wonderful people at Broughty Ferry who have supported the business over the years.”
