Knifeman stabs woman to death in ‘random street attack’ in front of terrified bystanders in Barcelona

A knifeman in Barcelona stabbed a woman to death in front of horrified onlookers in what authorities believe was a random street murder.

A photo of the attacker brandishing the gun he used on his alleged victim emerged overnight as police confirmed an arrest.

The fatal stabbing occurred in broad daylight yesterday morning at around 11am in Esplugues de Llobregat, in the southwest of the city.

Police are trying to determine whether the attacker knew his victim, whose age and nationality have not yet been disclosed.

They confirmed there was no romantic relationship between the couple that they were aware of, and well-placed sources said they were focusing on the theory that it was a random stabbing.

The woman, described locally as a ‘young’ and possibly of Asian descent according to an unconfirmed report, was stabbed in the throat, chest and abdomen.

A 50-year-old man was also injured in the incident and injured his arm, but his condition is not serious.

The suspected killer, wearing jeans and a hoodie and carrying a large black backpack, was arrested around noon in Barcelona’s Les Corts district, just east of Esplugues de Llobregat.

In an initial statement, Esplugues de Llobregat Town Hall said: ‘We are deeply saddened by the brutal death of a person in the town and offer our condolences to his family and loved ones.

‘The Council condemns all forms of violence and expresses concern about these serious incidents affecting community life and public safety.

‘The alleged perpetrator has already been arrested by the Mossos d’Esquadra regional police force.

‘From the outset, the Council has been co-ordinating with the Mossos d’Esquadra and the Esplugues Local Police, the force conducting the investigation, offering all necessary institutional cooperation to help clarify the facts.’

In a second statement, he confirmed that two days of official mourning had been declared starting from midnight today.

In a statement following the fatal stabbing, the Mossos D’Esquadra regional police force said: ‘Officers have arrested a man as a suspect in the violent death that occurred this afternoon in Esplugues de Llobregat in the province of Barcelona.

‘Around 11:00, the 112 emergency number received a report that a man had injured a woman and fled the scene.

‘Police and Emergency Health Service (SEM) came to the scene but could not save his life.

‘The alleged perpetrator was later found and arrested’

Crime scene footage shows a forensics tent being set up hiding the body from the public.

Terrorism was ignored as a justification.
