Daughter of Bondi terror victim to give evidence
A grandfather, who gave evidence anonymously under the pseudonym AAL, described with great emotion his fear of his grandchildren encountering antisemitism in Australia.
“I love this country. I thought we made a great choice,” he said, his voice shaking with emotion.
“Australia is not the one I choose to call home,” he said.
AAM also told the commission that her teenage grandson, who attends a non-Jewish school, was subjected to a substitute English teacher “making several Hitler salutes” in class.
“My grandson was 13, 14 at the time, and he left the classroom in great shock.”
“At the principal’s discretion, he invited my daughter and grandson to talk to him and praised him for being brave,” she said.
Eventually, after losing several friends, his grandson dropped out of school and enrolled in a Jewish day school; “It’s a bit challenging to pass armed guards on the way to school, but he’s much happier there.”
