Assam: BPF chief Hagrama Mohilary’s wife Sewli Mohilary eyes ministerial berth

Guwahati: Sewli Mohilary, wife of Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) chief Hagrama Mohilary, is planning to take up the ministerial post in the NDA government in Assam.

He is the first-time MLA from Kokrajhar. The NDA government will be sworn in on May 12.

A senior BJP leader, who did not want to be named, said, “BPF is likely to get a ministerial berth in the council of ministers. Similarly, Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) is also likely to get a ministerial berth. Along with the prime minister, one minister each from BPF and AGP will be sworn in on May 12.”

The leader said: “Earlier government allies had two ministerial seats each. In 2016, AGP got two ministerial seats, in 2021 AGP again got two ministerial seats. In 2021, the Liberal United People’s Party (UPPL) was an ally of the BJP and got two seats in the council of ministers. Now we have an alliance with the BPF. The BJP has a huge mandate and we need to accommodate several BJP leaders. In Assam, the size of the council of ministers includes the prime minister.” “It’s 18.”

This time, the BJP won 82 seats in the 126-member assembly, down from 60 seats in 2021. Together the NDA won 102 seats. Both AGP and BPF won 10 seats each.
While talking to media persons, Sewli said that he is willing to become a minister. “Being a minister will be able to do more work for the people.” BPF rejected former minister Pramila Rani Brahma’s party ticket and fielded Sewli from Kokrajhar seat. Brahma has been representing this Kokrajhar East constituency since 1991. In the post delimitation exercise in 2023, Kokrajhar East seat was renamed as Kokrajhar.

Hagrama told media persons: “BPF has not made any demand for the ministerial post. We want the Bodoland council area to be developed.”

BJP leader Himanta Biswa Sarma had said that the swearing-in ceremony of the NDA government will take place on May 12.

He told members of the press that the council of ministers would be sworn in at around 11:00 on May 12. There will be a meeting of the BJP legislative party on May 10. “The leader of the legislature party will be elected. Later, an NDA MLA meeting will be held where the NDA leader will be elected.”

Sarma said, “We will meet with the Governor around 12:00 and ask for permission to form a new government. Once the approval is received, the process of forming a government will begin.”

“The oath ceremony will take place in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi on May 12. Prime ministers and deputy prime ministers of 20 states will attend the oath ceremony. Many large industrialists are likely to attend the ceremony.”

“Several Satradhikars (heads) of Satra (Vaishnavite monasteries) are likely to attend this event. Booth committee heads of BJP and AGP will also attend the event. Even elected members of Gaon Panchayat will come to participate in the oath-taking function,” Sarma said.

BJP leader Jagat Prakash Nadda and Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini were appointed as observers to the party meeting in the legislative assembly.

After the assembly polls debacle, the Congress party has reviewed the party’s performance in the recently held assembly polls. Congress could win only 19 seats. It won 26 seats in 2021.

Debabrata Saikia, a two-time opposition leader, lost the election in the Nazira seat. Saikia is the son of former Assam chief minister Hiteswar Saikia.

Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) President Gaurav Gogoi, who lost from Jorhat seat, said: “There was a sharp drop in EVM battery levels between polling day and counting day, which raised doubts among party workers about the scale of BJP’s victory. Some EVMs, which allegedly showed around 96% battery level on polling day, were found with significantly reduced charge levels of around 6% during counting. They demanded a proper investigation into the matter.”

Congress leader Sibamoni Bora said that the confidence shown by the BJP leadership before the results were declared has further increased doubts within the party. “The results were unexpected. BJP leaders had repeatedly claimed that they would win certain seats by clear margins before counting. How could someone have predicted the results so accurately?”

Senior Congress leader Jitendra Singh, who recently resigned as general secretary for Assam following the electoral setback, also attended Saturday’s meeting.

“The voter lists were full of people from outside the state. We had taken up the issue with the Election Commission. Just before the election, we saw that a large number of people were brought from outside the state,” Gaurav said.
