He secured a two-thirds majority in the Assembly polls, securing a third consecutive term in the state. While the BJP won 82 seats in the 126-member Assembly, its ally Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) won 10 seats each.
Ahead of the meeting with the Governor, a spokesperson of the saffron party said that the BJP and its allies in the legislature will meet here at 9 am.
“The party’s MPs will meet at Atal Bihari Vajpayee Bhawan on Sunday morning and the legislative assembly will elect the new leader of the party. Union Minister JP Nadda and Haryana CM Nayab Singh Saini will be present as central observer and joint observer respectively,” he said.
Nadda and Saini had reached Guwahati on Saturday evening.
The meeting of the NDA partners’ legislature parties will be held at the same venue after the meeting of the BJP MLAs, the spokesperson said.
The AGP, which had already held a meeting with the newly elected MLAs, had suggested Himanta Biswa Sarma’s name for the chief minister’s post.
Sarma said on Friday that once the BJP leader is elected, it will be approved by the AGP and BPF and then the new leader will meet the governor to stake his claim to form the government.
He said that the swearing-in ceremony will be scheduled on May 12 at 11 am in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
