The Labor Party could become extinct as it moves further away from its working-class roots, senior officials have warned. The general secretary of Unite, one of Britain and Ireland’s most influential unions, warned the party was in danger of extinction in a conversation with the BBC’s Laura Kuenssberg on Sunday.
Sharon Graham said Labor had abandoned the working class, so the working class had chosen to abandon them. He believes the party needs “a completely different economic direction and political direction.” The same warning came from Sir Keir Starmer’s own party. Former Cabinet Minister Josh Simons has warned that Labor is “heading towards extinction” as traditional supporters switch to Reform UK. So what do you think? “People are now whispering that high turnout in working-class estates is bad for Labour. When a party is afraid of the people it was set up to represent, it is walking towards extinction,” he warned.
“I do not believe that the Prime Minister can rise to this moment. He has lost the country. He must take control of the situation by overseeing the orderly transition to the new prime minister.”
In a strongly worded op-ed, he said the party respected “elite interests” and lacked a “bold agenda to harness transformative technologies” such as artificial intelligence, while energy, water, housing and roads were “being dismantled while lining the pockets of the billionaires who control them.”
Despite their efforts, Labor MP Catherine West called on the Cabinet to push for a new Prime Minister. The former foreign minister said on Saturday he had the support of 10 MPs and hoped to go public and reach 81, the number needed to trigger a leadership contest.
