Man charged with attempted murder after car hit pedestrians in town centre

A 40-year-old man has been charged with five counts of attempted murder after a car crashed into a group of pedestrians in the city centre, leaving one man with life-threatening injuries.

Nottinghamshire Police said the incident involved a red Vauxhall Astra and occurred in Market Place, Arnold, at 1.12am on Saturday morning, following a recent “altercation” in the town centre.

As a result of the vehicle crash, a group of people died and 4 people were slightly injured.

Following the incident, the car was abandoned at the scene, while the driver fled on foot.

Duane Anthony, 40, is charged with five counts of attempted murder, aggravated vehicle burglary, driving while disqualified and driving without valid insurance, the sheriff’s office said.

Anthony, of Marton Road, Chilwell, will appear at Nottingham Magistrates’ Court on Monday morning.

Football club Woodthorpe Park Rangers said on Sunday that one of its players was fighting for his life in hospital after the incident.

The club said three members of its team, including the manager, were hit by a car in downtown Arnold.

The following statements were made in the statement: “We hope and pray for our player, a young man who is loved by everyone, and we support each other as much as we can.

“We are all clearly struggling at the moment and ask for privacy and respect to understand what has happened, this is a heartbreaking and awful time for our club.”

Detective Chief Inspector Ruby Burrow, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “As we share today’s news, our thoughts remain with those affected by this incident, particularly the man who suffered life-threatening injuries.

“The victims and their families have been informed of today’s charging decision, which we hope will provide some comfort at this difficult time.

“This was a shocking incident that will be incredibly distressing for everyone involved and anyone who witnessed it.

“In this regard, I would ask people to please not speculate about this incident online or otherwise, as doing so could potentially hinder the pursuit of justice.

“While our investigation continues, I would like to thank the entire investigation team who worked around the clock over the weekend to help secure these charges.”
