Vladimir Putin may soon drag British troops into a war in the Baltics after reaching a “dead end” in his invasion of Ukraine.

The warning comes from chess grandmaster Garry Kasparov, a leading foe of the Kremlin, who has predicted that the Russian dictator will seek “a small victory against NATO” to make up for the humiliation he suffered in the four-year Ukraine conflict.

His answer, the Putin critic predicts, will be to attack limited areas in the Baltic states of Estonia and Latvia, both NATO members. Kasparov says that if Putin chooses Narva in Estonia, this could lead to UK forces stationed in the country fighting to defend Estonia against the Russians, and they would not have time to wait for NATO to make a decision on collective defence. “Putin is clearly at an impasse in Ukraine,” Kasparov said.

“The front line is frozen, can hardly do anything there with only gains and enormous losses.

“A dictator in his position needs some kind of success.

“Putin, like every dictator, understands that everything can be forgiven except losing the war.”

If he is forced to halt his bloody campaign against Ukraine, in which he lost almost 1.4 million Russian soldiers, “there can only be one success,” the grandmaster said.

It will see “instilling in people the idea that we have defeated NATO.”

This would involve a provocation or attempt to seize perhaps some small areas of NATO territory in the Baltics; “This possibility increases day by day.”

Kasparov pointed out two possible symbolic targets.

“Any success, even if limited, is important. To capture five square kilometers [2 square miles] of the region near Narva [Estonia] or Daugavpils [Latvia].”

These are “Russian-speaking cities near the border”.

In the Narva incident, Kasparov said that even if NATO’s Article 5, which could trigger World War Three, was not activated, British troops could quickly find themselves at war.

He hinted at a secret agreement that would allow the British, who have around 900 troops in Estonia, to fight outside the NATO umbrella.

“If we imagine for a moment that the Russian army, or even limited troops, crossed the NATO border in the Narva region [Estonia] or Daugavpils [Latvia]”Then someone will have to answer,” he said.

“No one will wait for orders from us” [NATO HQ in] Brussels from an American general who would later call Washington.

“And so… we hear Estonians, Latvians and Lithuanians openly saying that the Western troops stationed there (for example, the British contingent in Estonia and the Canadian brigade in Latvia) will respond according to the decisions of the local authorities. [in Tallinn and Riga].

“In other words, the Estonians openly say that the British brigade will fight on the side of the Estonians, without waiting for what Brussels will say.

“I think there are other agreements, we don’t know everything to the end.

However, it is a fact that a new defense bloc has been created to respond to today’s concrete problems.”

The Baltic states of Latvia and Lithuania have said they would welcome additional U.S. troops if Germany withdraws 5,000 or more troops as Trump has threatened.

Meanwhile, the Volya military Telegram channel warned: “Since mid-March, we began to receive confirmation from the Russian Ministry of Defense and other structures that Vladimir Putin’s plans to invade the Baltic states have moved to the next stage.

The aim is “not to start a war with NATO, but to trigger a major crisis within the alliance by invading Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania, and ideally to ensure the effective disintegration of the alliance.”

The channel’s sources said Putin was secretly stockpiling hundreds of thousands of “unkillable” fiber optic drones for a possible future attack on NATO.

UK troops in Estonia are part of Operation Cabrit, the UK’s contribution to NATO’s advanced land forces.
