Tottenham: James Maddison says referees are petrified of making decisions

Tottenham Midfielder James Maddison claimed referees were “petrified” in their decision-making over the video assistant referee after they were refused an injury-time penalty. Leeds On Monday.

Substitute Maddison was beaten by a challenge from Lukas Nmecha, but referee Jarred Gillett and VAR rejected his request for a penalty kick.

The match finished 1-1, leaving Spurs two points above the relegation zone in the Premier League with two games to play.

Maddison, 29, making his first appearance of the season after returning from an anterior cruciate ligament injury, wrote on Instagram: “For clarity… The little touch to deflect the ball came from the outside of my right foot, not from Nmecha, and that’s what I told the referee.”

“However, the control ended in about 20 seconds. The referees are hesitant to make decisions on the field due to VAR. We continue the fight. COYS.”
