POLL: Should foreign flags be banned from flying over public buildings? | Politics | News

Nigel Farage has reignited a fierce political debate after pledging to ban foreign flags from flying over public buildings if Reform UK comes to power. Now Express.co.uk readers are being asked whether councils and other public bodies should be allowed to fly only British flags, or whether foreign flags should remain a symbol of solidarity and international support.

The row intensified after Reform councilors in Essex removed the Ukrainian flag from the County Council headquarters, prompting criticism from James Cleverly.

Mr Farage responded by declaring: “As part of the reform, foreign flags will no longer fly over our public buildings.”

The reform has already introduced flag restrictions in the councils it controls, limiting demonstrations to the Union Jack, St George’s Cross and county flags.

Party chief Zia Yusuf had earlier said that no other flags should be allowed on parliamentary flagpoles, balconies or parliamentary chambers.

Supporters say the policy promotes national pride, British identity and political neutrality in public institutions.

The reform argues that public buildings should represent the UK rather than overseas cases or international politics.

But critics accuse the party of undermining solidarity with allies such as Ukraine in the wake of Russia’s invasion. Some opponents have argued that the policy risks sending the wrong message internationally.

The issue has become part of a broader national debate about patriotism, sovereignty and what symbols should appear on taxpayer-funded buildings.

With Reformation rising in the polls and local government influence growing, debates about flags are unlikely to go away anytime soon.
