Tom Brady jokes about Bill Belichick in Georgetown commencement speech

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Tom Brady was chosen as the commencement speaker at Georgetown University’s business school graduation ceremony, and he delivered his speech the only way Brady knows how.

The seven-time Super Bowl champion was praised by those who spoke before him, prompting Brady to seemingly make a joke about his former head coach Bill Belichick.

“I’m not big on compliments. I had a coach who told me every day for 20 years how terrible I was,” Brady said.

Brady said he was “grateful” to be with the graduates and their loved ones. [New York] Jet fans.”

“As I sat here looking at this crowd of amazing business academics, I realized something; sports were such a strange way to make a living. People were yelling at me all the time, gambling on my performance, celebrating all my failures. Part of the way sports are so much like business is that when you do it long enough, your life is defined by numbers. Twenty-three was the number of professional seasons I played. Seven, those were my Super Bowl wins. Three, those were Super Bowl losses. Damn Eli Manning,” Brady continued.

Brady’s starting thesis was to fight through adversity and never give up, and the best way to convey Brady’s motivational message was to tell the story of his Super Bowl LI comeback against the Atlanta Falcons.

Brady mentioned the 99.7 number and said that if something happens 99.7% of the time, it’s a “foregone conclusion.” When Brady began telling the story of the comeback, he warned viewers about potential adult language.

“I was an athlete, so you might feel like you were in the locker room a little bit,” Brady said.

Brady then mentioned that the Falcons had a 99.7% chance of winning the Super Bowl after leading 28-3 late in the third quarter.

“When I woke up that morning, I didn’t think things were going to go quite like this,” he said.

“But you know what? Sometimes it happens. You’ll see it. You’ll think you’re better than your competition, you’ll work really hard, and things still won’t go your way. You’ll find yourself on the short end of that 99.7%, wondering how you got there.”

“Overcoming fear and doubt in the face of these challenges is where you gain the confidence to make your best choices when things don’t go your way,” he continued. “When the odds are against you, when you face your own 28-3 moment, and believe me that moment is coming, you have to make a choice: give up or fight it out on your own.

“The choice seems pretty obvious, and it’s easier said than done. I mean, why waste all that energy fighting when you’re almost certain to lose? Why not give up and live to fight another day? Sometimes there’s no other day. Super Bowl LI, there was no other day… You only get one chance to impress your boss, get a promotion, or close a deal, or not. So what then? You better prepare yourself in advance to deal with the challenges you’ll face. To give yourself the best chance in the biggest game of my life, when you’re down 25 points, Do you think I came across my decision to continue fighting by chance? The previous 25 years of my life had prepared me for this moment.

“You don’t give up and you don’t make excuses…” Brady continued. “When the opportunity to do something special presents itself, the people most prepared to face adversity will be the ones who have made the hardest choices, who have faced and overcome challenges. They certainly wouldn’t win all their fights, but they would never give up… If there was a 99.7% chance, it would be that I would be behind the counter at Ben’s Chili Bowl before I would be behind center in an NFL game. But no one could have imagined that I would finish my career with seven worlds. Maybe none of these people knew that I would never, ever give up.”

Brady said he had a choice to make when facing a 25-point deficit.

“I said to myself, ‘Don’t be a bit of a bitch. Go out there and fight yourself. Win or lose, fight until the end.’ “We had no idea at that moment what the outcome of the game would be, but one thing I’ve learned through sport is that the only time you’re sure to lose is when you give up.”

Brady also told the graduates that they may have to work with people they don’t like “like the guys at Duke,” which will force them to confront their own fears and doubts “on the path to success in life.”

“Your 28-3 moment probably won’t end with a trophy or a parade. It might not even end in victory. It’s hardly over for us. But that’s not the point,” Brady said. “These are all momentary tests where failure is not final, only giving up is. Choosing to fight is an opportunity to succeed, yes, but it is also your chance to grow and show everyone that although you may be beatable, you are invincible…

“The only thing worse than losing the biggest game of your life is losing your self-respect along the way.”

To close his speech, Brady implored graduates to surround themselves with people who push them to do their best: “Even if one of those people is a grumpy old coach who cuts off the sleeves of his sweatpants and yells at you all day long.”
